Ground Broken for New Church (Aug 9, 1913)

GROUND BROKEN
      FOR NEW CHURCH
John Benedict Turns First Sod–
Father Rourke Delivers Invo-
vocation–Work to Begin
at Once.
      Before a large gathering of
parishioners and friends, ground
was broken on Wednesday morn-
ning for the new Church of the
Imaculate Heart of Mary which
will be erected at the corner of
White Plains Road and Carmen
Avenue.
At about a quarter to ten the
Rev. Father William C. Rourke,
pastor of the church, appeared on
the site accompanied by Walter J.
Masterson and Charles H. Chrys-
tal, the newly appointed Trustees
of the parish. At ten o’clock the
formal breaking of ground was
gone through by John Benedict, a
prominent member of the parish,
who has been largely instrumental
in making the building possible.
      Before the ground was broken,
Father Rourke made a short ad-
dress of dedication and offered a
prayer and invocation. He then
divested himself of the stole and
sprinkled holy water on the site
and blessed it.
Mr. Benedict, using a new spade
then turned the first sod and the
construction of the new church,
which Father Rourke’s flock have
been hoping for so long, was
begun.
